Israel has banned Rep. Ilhan Omar and Rep. Rashida Tlaib from entering the country. This comes after President Trump tweeted that allowing them to enter would show “great weakness.”
Israel banned the congresswomen on the basis that it is illegal for foreign supporters of Boycott Divest Sanction to enter the country. BDS is an anti-Semitic movement that wants to bring Israel down.
Both Tlaib and Omar have used anti-Semitic rhetoric and support BDS. The two members of the squad are not above the law. So, it makes sense for Israel to stop them from entering the country.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated that Tlaib may still be allowed to enter the country, to visit family. This would require her to file a humanitarian request. Netanyahu told reporters that the two congresswomen had an itinerary that only focused on strengthening Palestine.
Democrats have rallied around the banned squad members, claiming that the decision to bar them does not advance US-Israel relations.
Omar has been condemned publicly by other Democrat leaders for her anti-Semitic comments. Omar is on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and many have called for her removal because of her remarks.
It makes sense for Israel to ban these squad members. They do not want to advance US-Israel relations. Their pro-Hamas agenda directly effects the safety of Israelis. The law blocking these two was put in place long before they tried to enter the country.
Tlaib and Omar’s trip was privately funded by a Palestinian nonprofit. Furthering the speculation that this trip was not in the best interest for the safety of Israel.
